Best. Gift. Ever.

I'm totally not bragging on myself.
Though it will sound like I am...
I just gave the best gift ever.
It's a birthday prezzie for my friend Susan:
A doodle from the happy & talented Kitty of Kitty Pink Stars on Etsy.
Kitty was so amazing to work with.
And the doodle makes me so happy.
But, more importantly, it makes the birthday girl happy!
Excuse me while I pat myself on the back.
I'm not bragging.
Really.

Ahoy ye landlubbers!

Zoey was NOT happy about having to pose for pictures after school today in her pirate costume.
I just know, in that picture up top, she's picturing me walking the plank. Or worse: swabbing the deck!

Zoey's pirate costume turned out pretty easy. She already had the pants & boots. She DESPERATELY wanted a hook for her hand. So, I searched 4 shops until I landed at Target, where I spent $8 for a package that contained a hook, hat, eye patch, sword & round hoop clip-on earring.

I had some super thick gold cording that she tied around her waist. It got lost at school today, so for the photos we raided the girls' dress-up bin & I found a sash, adorned with beads.

The only thing I DIDN'T have was the shirt. And I didn't want to spend a lot of money on costumes. So I started googling "How to make a pirate shirt" & I came across THIS ARTICLE which started me in the right direction.

I found a long sleeved {boys} shirt at Goodwill for $2. And then I gathered white thread (to use on the sewing machine & for some hand stitching), lace (mine was 1 3/4" wide, but I would say anything up to 3" wide would work well), & some black hemp cord (you could also use string or ribbon).

First you'll want to gather 18" of lace for the cuff of one sleeves.

Pin the lace onto the outside of the cuff & sew with a sewing machine.
Repeat this for the other sleeve.

Next, take a long piece of lace & form it into a "v" shape on the front of the shirt.
The lace for my cuffs was different than the lace for my shirt. I found a scrap piece in my stash that I really liked for the front of the shirt.
Pin in place & stitch on with a sewing machine.

Now you can thread your hemp cord onto a fat needle.
As you can see, I just did a VERY basic job of stitching some X's.
I decided not to have a "bow" on the front.

The bow is hidden on the inside. But you can adjust yours so the bow is on the outside. The thick needle creates little holes in the shirt, so you can actually pre-poke the holes & then just thread the cord with your fingers, in & out of the holes.

Another option is gluing ribbon/cord/string in a zig-zag pattern, instead of sewing.

And that's it.
Once all the pieces of the costume are put together, it really looks like a pirate shirt.

Argh!

Give a Hoot! Pazely's Cute!

 I did it!
This little crafty mama made her FIRST Halloween costume!
I definitely didn't come up with this idea on my own.
I found the how-to via pinterest.
The direct link is HERE. (There are other easy-peasy costumes on that site too.)
I'm all about embellishing existing clothes, which is how this costume was constructed.
Why was I ever intimidated in the past??
Pazely loves it, too!!
What follows is not a tutorial, but just photos of my work-in-progress...

I couldn't pick just ONE photo of Pazely in her costume.
So, you get several!

Today the girls get to wear their costumes at school for their Halloween party.
Tomorrow, I'll share Zoey's costume!

Tuesday

Yesterday it was almost 80 degrees. It's supposed to SNOW tonight!!
What?
The midwest has the craziest weather EVA.

The girls & I just got home from the Scholastic book fair at their school. I gave them each a little wad of money to spend. I LOVED book fairs when I was in elementary school. I remember that our classes would get to go to the library & all the books were lined up like a little store. My favorite things were all the little tiny cutesy stuffs: bookmarks, pencils, pens, erasers, posters. In keeping with the tradition, my children picked out a couple books this evening, but mostly chose things like bookmarks, pencils, pens, erasers & posters.

Do you want to know what else I did today? I took a solo trip "to town" (I think it's funny to say that) & bought Halloween costume-makin' supplies! Believe it or not, this crafty mama has NEVER made a Halloween costume. I'm not totally into Halloween. But something just got into me this year & all of a sudden I felt like I had the confidence to make dress up clothes for the girls. I have found EASY directions for the girls' specific dress-up attire of choice. I won't reveal yet, but I can't wait to get started & share them with you! I'm crossing my fingers that the girls love the costumes & that they actually look like what they're supposed to look like.
I'm excited to get in my crafty zone tonight, when all the fam goes to sleep, & start cutting & sewing.

But for now, the children & the Mr. & I are going to partake in some caramel apple cider & kettle corn while we get our Family Night on.
Bring on some Wii competition.
Yeah!

Circles & Letters

A simple idea for creating personalized gift tags & polka dotted packaging using a 1-inch punch, a 2-inch punch, a mini hole punch, a glue stick, twine, scraps of paper & gobs of alphabet stickers.

A photo tutorial...

TUTORIAL: Mini Tag Banner

I originally saw a banner made with small tags hung from a chain in a home decor magazine about 5 years ago. Home Companion, I think?? It was a patriotic banner. I took the idea & ran, attacking it with all sorts of crafty supplies & embellishments. I'm so happy to share with you the "How-To" for making my Mini Tag Banners.

Each tag is made from those round circular tags, with the metal edges, found at office supply stores, or Walmart. You can purchase them with strings attached, or metal keyrings. I prefer the keyrings, as it gives me more options. You'll see what I mean later on.

After you've decided what you want your banner to say, choose the appropriate number of tags & then remove the string or rings that came attached. And then comes the part I love: choosing papers & letters. I love this part! Did I say that already? I have {unintentionally} collected all sorts of alphabet stickers over the years. It's quite fun to mix & match! And don't forget about plastic letter beads (like in the picture below) or even scrabble tiles.

You'll notice that the round tags have a wider metal edge on one side--which I call the "front side", & a thin metal edge on the "back side". A 1-inch circle punch creates the PERFECT size circle for the front side. However, the back side is a wonky size. You could just simply trace around the tag & cut a circle with scissors & be done with it. But I like the metal edge to show...

...so I found this handy trick, which might not even be that handy at all, but it's how I do it. I place my piece of paper on top of the tag, back side of tag face-up. And then I use one of those embossing tools & push hard around the edge of the metal circle. It creates the correct-sized circle.

I cut around the embossed circle shape & there it is!

At this point you can adhere the letter stickers to your circles. If you have any rub-on letters, apply those now too. Then, it's time to glue your paper circles onto the tags. I use Mod-Podge. Once the papers are attached, spread another coat of Mod-Podge over the front & back of the newly-papered tags, & over the stickers & rub-ons too.

When the tags are dry, you can punch a small hole near the top of each tag & attach them to your rings. If you purchased tags with rings already attached, & you like the look of those, you can RE-attach those. I often opt for using split rings found in the jewelry dept. of craft stores, or Walmart. I think I use the 9mm ones. Split rings are exactly like keychains, only teeny tiny.

Now it's time to embellish! Pull it all out: glitter, buttons, gems, sequins, flowers, punches, etc. When everything is attached (with a glue gun or E6000), I seal over things like glitter, paper punches & flat sequins with Mod-Podge. It all dries clear, so no worries.
When your tags are all pretty-like, you can loop them onto the chain. I usually use chain that is also found in the jewelry dept. of craft stores, or Walmart. I don't know what it's called. But, if you prefer a more industrial look, I have also purchsed chain from Home Depot. They'll cut whatever length you want. That industrial look goes quite well with the split rings that come already attached to the round office tags.
As far as the length of the chain, I like to have about 3-4" hang off each end. But you can do it how you want.

The final step in completing your Mini Tag Banner is finishing off each end of the chain. I'm not a jewelry maker. Though I have a few tools & supplies, I have no idea what I'm doing with them. I just slap some beads onto some wire, or better yet: some head pins or eye pins, & then I loop-de-loop the wire & twist it all up in a little messy bunch until I know those beads won't budge! And you know what? It works. So, don't be intimidated by that part.

The banner shown throughout the tutorial is for a customer who requested a holiday design that read "WAITING"....a reminder that we are waiting for Christmas, but also for Jesus to come again.

Here are some other designs I've created in the past, to give you some ideas & inspiration...
