High. Low.

Every night at dinner our family does this thing I call "High-Low". Everyone has a chance to share their "High" of the day (the thing that was the most awesome & best ever!) & their "Low" (something that was rather disappointing & awful). Years ago I got the idea from a movie--I think it had Michelle Pfeiffer in it?? I had forgotten about doing it for a while until we moved to Nebraska. It has really helped our family become closer. I just find it so interesting to hear the happy & not-so-happy things in my girls' day. The things that weigh heavy in their heart as far as importance & value always amaze me. (And it's a fun way to peek into their day!) It TOTALLY opens the door for communication.

Yesterday, my "High" was getting to {finally} photograph some neato stuff I saw while driving. I was the pilot on our weekly trip to Scottsbluff rather than the passenger, so I had a wee bit of navigational control. My "Low"? Well, my Skype presentation to the MOPS group in St. Louis was canceled due to weather. But, it's being rescheduled! YAY!
(Oh! And I'm going to predetermine my "High" for today: I've reached 700 Etsy sales!!!)

  2. "The Story Of Us"... which is a movie that doesn't get the credit it deserves, I think.

Glad your low will have the opprotunity to become a high soon!

700 sales?! Wow. Congratulations! I'm still waiting on that first sale. *sighs* Do you have any advice?

I keep adding items, blogging about them every now and again, and I even showcased some items once. Still no sales. :(

  6. We do the same thing at dinner! But we're not as inventive and just say favorite/least favorite. We have a lot of friends who have their kids say something they are grateful for, but we realized that as our oldest aged he needed to also vent about those things which are not going well. It is such a great way to get the family talking.
I'm from St. Louis and couldn't figure out what MOPS group you were speaking to, if it gets rescheduled do you think I can join in? I have a pre-Ker but am not in the group. Would love to see your chat!

  7. I love the hi/low idea and I try to do it with our kids at dinner also. It's a hard thing to get my boys to talk about their "school" day so anything that I can do to get the communication going is a huge plus.
I have to comment on the blue sky above the sign in your pic!! I am from upstate NY and we just see gray skies and snow around here. Anytime I see a blue like that in January it catches my eye!! Congrats on the etsy sales. I am not even close!!!

  10. What a wonderful idea, definitely stealing that one, I am so tired of hearing "ok" as the response to how was your day? More than a one word answer would be lovely!!

    Congrats on the Etsy success!
    Cheers

  11. Cute idea! We do this on our way home from school. I always ask. What was one good thing that happened today? What was one bad thing?

    Congrats on your sales!

  12. Every night as I tuck my daughter into bed, I ask her what her favorite part of the day was. My hope is that she'll go to sleep focused on the positive.

  14. "The story if Us" with Michelle Pfeiffer and Bruce Willis.... I loved that movie right from the start and together with tthe high/low scene I like the message from the scene where they argue and argue, and when the camera zooms out you can see their parents and in laws, all of them in the couple's bed....I totally agree with Lia

700 sales! Way to go! You rock Nikki!
    Cheers!

  15. Whata fun sign! Congrats on your sales milestone!!! And we do something similar that the girls call "My favorite day..." which started last year at the end of vacation where I wanted to know which day was their favorite and why. We then started playing daily and though the name stuck the girls would start each turn by saying well, my day was good or bad and why... . We now only play when there is a lull in the conversation- anything to get everyone talking!! So important. :)
