The girls are in their bedrooms, gently drifting to sleep. And I'm out in the kitchen washing dishes, noisily putting them in the dishwasher. The bowls clank. The forks & spoons ting.
I remember being a little kid, lying in bed at night, & hearing my mom scrubbing dishes, opening cupboards, stacking plates, maneuvering pots & pans, running water in the sink, tossing utensils in their drawers. For whatever reason, those were happy noises to me. A glad kitchen symphony. Really, they were comforting sounds. A casserole dish kerplunking in sudsy water & plastic cups slapping the top rack in the dishwasher might sound like an odd soothing melody, but for me, it meant "mom is near". Safety, protection, & security were all wrapped up in the simple sound of a freshly washed dish sliding across the counter + a spoon falling into a caddy + the shutting of a cabinet.
All while I dozed off into dreamland just down the hallway.

I remember the same thing and thinking that too. I know my kids like it when I'm still up after they go to bed. One time I was exhausted and went to bed right after I tucked in the kids and my middle man who's 10 was a little apprehensive and I'm sure that's why. It's comforting to know that Mom or Dad are still awake and keeping watch.
ReplyDeleteI know my kids, too, love it when I am still up after they go to bed. Especially my 10 year old. As I tuck her in every night, she always asks, "What time are you going to bed, mom?" For some reason she needs to be triple reassured that I'll be awake. I'm like, "What? Are you my mother?" haha!
DeleteI have very similar memories. My bedroom was right next to the kitchen and my parents used to wash the dishes together right before they went to bed. It usually woke me up, which sometimes annoyed me, but mostly I kinda liked it.
ReplyDeleteThey washed dishes together? Now that is sweet! I think I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen my dad wash dishes. :0)
DeleteThey are good memories aren't they. I seem to remember my Mum up early and getting breakfast ready for us all before we headed off to school and Dad off to work. My daughter who is now 17 runs off to bed at the hint of me heading to bed. lol She just likes being comfy in bed before I turn lights out and lock everything up. :-)
ReplyDeleteMy mom used to iron and play soft music outside my door when I went to sleep. I still think of that as one of my most comforting memories. :)
ReplyDeleteI happened on your blog by chance several years ago, and I check in quite often. I've never commented; trying to keep my digital footprint small, but I wanted you to do a happy dance. Your talent for capturing life in writing is a gift...and for whatever reason, it really seems to be polished lately. I have enjoyed your posts so much...thank you!
ReplyDeleteHi Joette! (And thanks for the opportunity to happy dance!) I really take your comment to heart. The last couple years I have been spread out in many directions. I've been wanting to focus more on my blog &, more specifically, writing. But I just couldn't give it the time & attention I wanted to give it. A few months ago I made a commitment to myself to do what I love, to do what makes my heart happy. And writing is on the top of the list. I am very encouraged by your words & feel that my choice to chase after this is paying off! Thank YOU!
