Owlie News

These felt owlie pencil toppers are in the shop now! I've made up a dozen or so of them as part of my crafty inventory for the holiday bazaar too. They'll be accompanied by some cupcakes & some other yet-to-be determined design. I think these would make excellent stocking stuffers. Don't you? (I know you might be cringing thinking of the holidays already, but I HAVE to. Believe me, I'd cringe too.)
And I'm almost, almost, almost done with my first batch of harvest owlies. I'm so excited about them & have even changed up a few things about the owlies in general. Firstly, I'm using a bit of a machine embroidery technique to embellish them. It's such a special {& yet simple} touch--just wait 'til you see. And secondly, I've decided to make limited numbers of the owlies. The vintage fabric I find to create my owlies usually comes in small quantities. So, I'll decide how many owlies can come from a particular piece of fabric & then number them accordingly: 1 of 15, 2 of 15 etc. Some owlies may come in a limited number of 25, some may only come in a limited number of 5. It all just depends on the fabric I find. I think that'll make 'em even more special. I hope you think so too.
I'll definitely have a preview of the owlies this weekend for ya! (And possibly a few in the shop!)

Super Simple Thank You Notes

With Zoey's birthday party complete, that means it's time for the thank you's. And I don't always have time to get super crafty (believe it or not), so I whipped up some quick notes. I made sure to take a photo of all the party guests together on the day of the birthday celebration. Then I simply had the photos made into wallet-sized pictures at Walmart, used some double-stick tape to attach them to some pretty patterned notecards & I was done! It'll be a nice little reminder to her friends of the fun had on Zoey's special day.

The Fort

A simple bedsheet can be magic.
A castle. A fortress...
A canopy of inspiration.
A shroud of silly fun.

Week in Review

It's a happy, happy Fall week-in-review to you! Our first Fall weekend was a dandy one of relaxation & some outdoor play!
The ice cream truck actually showed up on the first day of Fall! That just doesn't seem right. The weather's been too warm & I've been sick of this "Faux Fall" trickery. Until Sunday. Sunday was the first day I've felt Mr. Fall truly make his appearance. The warm-ish sun mixed with a cool breeze & brought on some fort building in the backyard.
I made pumpkin pancakes for the first time this week. And I can't wait to try pumpkin EVERYTHING this Fall. Mmmmmm.
And I'm squealing & giddy & jumping up-n-down with sweet silly excitement! Did you see the work-in-progress photo of the owlies? It's been a while since I've stitched up some of these owlie friends. And I've used every bit of perfect warm & cozy fabric, felt & trim I could find to make them. Autumn owlies coming soon! Again: *squee!*

Happy Monday!

The Winner...

A big "YAY!" goes out to An Almost Unschooling Mom for winning the Party-tastic Giveaway!
Thanks for playing along everyone!
Happy Weekend!

Sweet Tooth Soulmate

Today is Applooza, a festival organized by a local Christian school to raise funds for their children's programs. We took the girls last year for the first time. The event has the usual carnival-type games, bounce houses & lots of activities for kids. Oh, yes, & we waited over an hour in line so the girls could ride a pony for 3 minutes. Good times. There are food booths & bake sales & an overall feeling of Fall & festivity in the air.
It's also where I tasted fried apples for the first time. It was true love when we met.
Not sure what the family's plans are for the day. But MINE include paying a visit to say "hello" to those apples. We only see each other once a year you know.
Have a happy weekend!

Weekend Deals

Get yer HOLIDAY shopping started early, 'cause this weekend (September 25-27) you can buy any 3 Vintage Button Rings for $24 at WhiMSy love!!

Smorgasbord.

Apparently there is a pumpkin shortage. Just found that out from one of my fellow Twitter peeps. Not enough sun & too much rain made for a small crop. So now all my running around to every grocery store in town for canned pumpkin kinda makes sense.

I saw the movie Rumba last weekend. I'm a sucker for a great foreign indie film & this was SUPER! It was lovely, charming, funny & perfect in every way. You have to watch it! There was not a whole lot of speaking in the movie, which was interesting. The characters/actors are amazing. To see a preview click HERE. I want to dance like Fiona.

My weekly Tuesday adventure with Tia was another dandy. We sucked down some coffee & headed to the library where we realized that the quiet atmosphere really is not best suited for us. We quietly flipped through mags, oh-so-gently conversed in hushed tones & pitter-pattered with gentle fingertips on the computer. We got the giggles & then knowing we HAD to be quiet just made it worse. But, we managed to perfect the "giggle whisper"!

So, I "officially" found out that I'm definitely a vendor at the Badger Mountain Holiday Bazaar that I applied for. It's only the 2nd time I've ever done a show---this same bazaar was my first last year. Maybe it's silly that I'm doing it, since I didn't have such success the first time around. I'm really trying to think of a new way to approach it. I just need time to work on some new ideas. And build stock in the items that are my crafty foundation. And then I always have my annual holiday ornament & card to unveil. I haven't even STARTED on those. Need to work on that. Gosh, I better get craftin'!

I just heard of wheresmycellphone.com & if you've lost your cell phone you can enter your phone number & it will call you for free. Haven't tried yet, but it seems genius to me. And I lose my cell phone ALL the time.
Have you seen THIS yet? Pure brilliance. And beautiful.

Happiness is Fall! Yippee!!

I can't believe it's finally here. Although it's still super warm outside, I do feel the cool creeping in--especially the early mornings. That's when I open the windows & enjoy some cozy socks.

Last night I went on a tour of my city trying to track down some canned pumpkin. I was determined to bake some pumpkin bread & have it ready for the girls' teachers. FOUR grocery stores later I finally found the stupid canned pumpkin.
One of the grocer people at store #3 said I was about the 4th person that asked him for canned pumpkin. He thought it was strange. He said, "I can see people wanting it a MONTH from now..." Hmm. There are silly little velour Christmas baby outfits & cinnamon pinecones displayed in the store & you think it's weird that I want canned pumpkin NOW?
And don't even get me started on the mindgames I was having with the pimply faced boys working at store #2.
Anyway, store #4 had my treasure & I seriously sighed a heavy, "Thank you Jeeeesuuuuusssss!" as I skipped down the aisle to graby my booty. I got home & the girls helped me bake up the bread. The house was full of yummy smells. I can't wait to play the part of Autumn nymph & hand out happy loaves to unsuspecting lovely people.

Welcome, Fall, my favorite season. I'm so glad you're finally here!!

UPDATE: Sorry, my little pumpkin lovers. I forgot to attach the recipe. Click HERE for the recipe I got from Lisa's blog at Polka Dot Cottage.

Paper Doll/Old Fashioned Birthday Party

What a whirlwind! I find that I work hard & get all anxious & excited for the parties to arrive & then they're here & gone & next....*insert deflating balloon sound*.
This party was a different one for Zoey--& for me as well. It was her first "friends" party. I sorta felt like I was the director at a fun little summer camp, leading the girls from project, to activity, to game, to snacks, etc. I loved it!! One thing I would change next party: Get. Help. There were 7 girls total, which isn't overwhelming at all, but I just wish I had more hands to help so I could snap some more fun photos!

Well, let's get to it!
The party theme started out as "paper dolls", but it kinda morphed into something different as I planned along & I was very happy with the outcome.

HERE are the paper doll party invites. Love.

I had a lovely morning before the party at the Farmer's Market gathering some sweet eats for the foodie table at the celebration. The party was from 10-noon, so it's not like I had to serve a meal, but I always like to have some munchy type stuff anyway. Golden raspberries, asian pears, the sweetest most tastiest grapes I've ever had, a caramel apple ring pastry, blueberry bread & cheddar cheese cubes.

One of my favorite things at the party was this little pedestal holding some mini cupcakes. You can also see some paper doll chains I taped to the window.

When the little party people arrived I gave them each a handmade party crown. I painted alternating stripes in pink (with spray paint) & yellow (watered down acrylic paint for a washed look rather then solid color).

It wasn't a sunny day, but it was a perfect temperature, so we set up tables outside where the girls worked on some projects.

The first project we made were these spinners. A lovely blog reader sent me the neatest link HERE for these & other paper toys.

And then I showed the girls how to make paper doll chains from newspaper. They were so creative with their cutting. Some even made heart chains & bunnies. They all seemed to have a fun time. I even made a cupcake one! (not pictured)

Next were the games!
I think I found the idea for this String Hunt game in one of my vintage kid's party books. Before the party, I hid 50 pieces of varying lengths of string around the backyard. The girls had to hunt for as many strings as they could find. The winner wasn't the person who had the most string: The girls each took their own strings & connected 'em from end-to-end. Whoever's strings were the longest was the winner!

For the pillowcase race, I purchased very inexpensive pillowcases at the thrift store & the girls hoppity-hopped their hearts out! I would have loved to have found some burlap bags for a traditional gunnysack race, but I made do.

I made 2 badges for the winners of each game. BUT, it was my first time experiencing an upset child due to the fact that they "didn't win". I just thought that at this age they'd be fine with winners vs. non-winners. Maybe I'm wrong. Party foul.
You can see one of the party guests wearing her winning badge in this photo:

Cupcake time! I have SO many cupcake photos but I don't want to bore you with sweetness overload. So I'm dedicating a complete separate post to my cupcakes. haha! (I'm serious.)
I used the same vintage paper doll graphics from the birthday invitations for the cupcake picks. I was bummed that I didn't get a nice close-up shot of the cupcakes all adorned with their handmade picks.

Mr. WhiMSy love is so funny. I really could do without the mylar balloons in every shape & size AND the tacky "7" candle. But that's HIS thing & he loves doing it every year for the girls' birthdays.

We even had Mrs. Moth stop by to check out the cupcakes. She has good taste.

Piñata anyone?! We bought this piñata at Walmart. I love the shape of it.

I had to run inside during the piñata portion of the show to deal with the birthday girl's fussy 5 year old sister. So, I missed out on that super fun busted pinata photo. Darn.

The girls quickly gathered toys & candies & stuffed it all in their bags. I made the bags the night before. They are simple brown paper lunch bags. I snipped off some of the paper dolls from the chains I have been cutting for the past 3 weeks & laid one on top of each bag. I sprayed the edges with white paint to create this effect.

Oh, & we discovered the piñata was like a 2-fer deal. The pointy parts of it made really kooky party headgear.

OK. Now for my favorite part: The Goodie Bags!!! I added only one personal touch to the goodies inside the bags & they were these hair bobbies I made with my button machine. I LOVE how they turned out. All made with vintage fabric.

The goodies included: stickers, a loopy straw, a candy watch, a girly lollipop, a whistle toy, faux ring bling &  handmade hair bobbies.

The goodies were all tossed in these bags that I already had on hand, a purchase made last year from Etsy. I punched holes at the top & tied them off with polka dotted pink ribbon. The girls also took home a sheet of paper dolls in the same style as the invitations & the cupcake picks.

While the girls & I waited for their parents to pick them up, we drew chalk portraits. The girls didn't get finished though because the mommies & daddies started arriving shortly after we began. My friend Julie commented on the lovely "murder art" as she picked up her girls. HAHA!

Hoory for parties! With friends!

And yay for mommies who get to play along!

That's all folks!
