Crafty Night: December

Crafty Night: December was a little different than other Crafty Nights in the past. I almost canceled due to the fact that it's almost Christmas & I thought everyone might be busy with all the holiday preparations & shopping & fretting & stuff. (And I was kinda looking forward to taking a break from teaching a craft.) But then I thought how fun it would be to have all my crafty peeps gather for a night of working on our OWN projects. And that's what we did! Everyone brought yummy eats to share, I made wassail, there were holiday tunes aplenty & everyone took home a "dream" owlie ornament that I customized on the back side to read "crafty night".
(One guest brought pumpkin fluff, served with pretzels, graham crackers, & ginger snaps for dipping. How have I never heard of this fluff stuff before?? IT IS AMAZING!!!!)
It was such a relaxing night.
I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY enjoyed it.
Uninterrupted crafting for a solid chunk of time, surrounded by friends, eating delicious food & sipping hot drinks. It really was perfection.

All that said, I've decided to switch up the format of Crafty Night.
Every other month we'll bring our own projects to work on. (FREE!) The other months, I'll continue to teach a craft. (Still only $5!)
Hopefully that won't get too confusing. If it does, I have no problem completely rearranging things once again, so that EVERY month we'll bring our own projects & just hang out to craft.

It's kind of deflating to put all this time & energy into preparing a night of crafting when not too many crafty peoples are showing up. I don't know if that's because I'm in a small town. I don't know if that's because I'm doing a horrible job of getting the word out. I don't know if that's because the number of crafty people per capita is minimal in my vicinity of the world. I don't know why.
Sadly, it's just not worth it. It's just not working out how I dreamed it would.
So, we'll see how the new change goes.

The new "every other" format begins January 2012. I'll kick things off by teaching a craft.
I'll be sending out postcard reminders every month, so if you're thinking of attending, let me know, & I'll put you on the mailing list!

Crafty Night: OCTOBER

Though the weather stuck its tongue out at me & was all up in my face with its 70-ish temp, Crafty Night: OCTOBER was perfectly autumn inspired nonetheless.

On the crafty menu for the night were Burlap & Felt Wreaths. Since this idea was not my own, I will not give you a personal tutorial, but rather leave links & tips that I found useful along the way. I pieced together a few different components of wreaths I saw over the internet that I really liked & made the wreath you see here. Here's everything you need to know to make your own...

To make the burlap wreath, follow the instructions HERE. The only thing this "how-to" link didn't specify {or maybe I just didn't see it} was the size of the wreath used. So, when I went to make mine, I cut the burlap in the sizes suggested in the tutorial, but they ended up being too small for my wreath. It still worked out, but if I had a do-over I'd do it differently. (See next step below...)

I found the awesome idea for creating a wreath base with pipe insulation, instead of purchasing expensive wreath forms, HERE. I'm on a budget, so I was super excited at that find!! The pipe insulation is 6' long. For my wreath, I cut a piece 44" long & made it into a circle. If it starts to bend, you can stuff newspapers in it.

I purchased pipe insulation in both 1" diameter sizes & 3/4" diameter, only because there was a limited supply of the 1" that I wanted. Both sizes of pipe insulation were less than $1.50 each. (The cheapest I found a wreath base was $2.99!) ANYWAY, looking back I would make my wreath a bit smaller, not only so that the 1st piece of burlap wraps around my wreath base in one piece (instead of having to use extra pieces), but also so that when I gather burlap piece #2 & #3 in a ruffle, it would be a bit more "ruffly". But remember this: with that pipe insulation stuff, if you start going smaller in wreath size, it WILL bend & you WILL need to stuff it with papers. Just an FYI. My Crafty Night guests made wreaths in sizes from 40"-44".

My burlap was purchased on sale at Joanne's. Still a bit more than I wanted to spend at $2.99/yd. Couldn't even use my 50% off coupon because it was on sale. That was frustrating. Regular price is $3.99/yd. I saw it at Walmart for regualar price of $2.97/yd.
(From 2 yards of fabric--48 inches wide--you can make 4 wreaths.)
Total, this wreath cost about $5.00 to make.

To make the flowers for the wreaths, click HERE to find the tute. (It's a tutorial for a yarn wreath, but just scroll down in that link & find the instructions for the felt roses.)

I happened to have some leftover felt from the chair covers I made for Crafty Night. It's a yummy warm brown spice color & I love it! It was purchased by the yard. My color choices by-the-yard were limited, so I had to buy those small rectangle felt pieces in dark brown, which were regularly priced at 34cents each at Joanne's, but on sale for 25cents each. I discovered later that day that Walmart has them regularly priced at 20cents each.

This project uses lots of hot glue, so just cozy up with your hot glue gun.

This project is so forgiving. Everything does not have to be perfect. In fact, after I made my wreath, I decided to snip the top ruffled layer so it would be a bit more narrow.

While some of my crafty friends were wrestling with the burlap, others were enjoying some tasty wassail that I made. I know, wassail is usually reserved for Christmas. But I couldn't help it. It sounded so yummy! (Mine was rum-less of course.) In fact, I did make wassail for Crafty Night: January too. I'll have to post my recipe one of these days.

Since we no longer share a meal together before Crafty Night, everyone brought treats to share. It was so fun! We will continue to do this every month. Not mandatory if you want to come & craft, just an "if you want to" thing.

Here are some of the wreaths made:

Everyone took home a pumpkin pouch favor.

I saw the instructions to make these pumpkins from Martha Stewart, HERE.
The instructions call for you to cut a 10" circle from crepe paper. I couldn't find crepe paper. I couldn't even find orange tissue paper. But I DID spot a 97cent package of 24 count napkins in bright orange at Walmart. SCORE! And, another bonus: the border around the edge of the napkin created a perfect 10" square. I could just eyeball my circle & cut! I piled a heaping 1/2 CUP of candy corn onto the middle of the napkin before cinching up, twisting & finishing off with the floral tape stem.
(Not too heaping. Just semi-heaping.)

This is how these favors break down...
I could get about 5 pumpkins worth of candy from each bag. (Darn, I can't remember which size bag I bought. Not the HUGE bag. It was the $1.98 bag from Walmart.) The floral tape I bought from Joanne's was awful, awful, yucky sticky. It stuck to everything but itself. I don't remember which brand it was, but I will avoid it in the future.
So, basically, with your 24 ct. package of napkins, floral tape & 5 bags of candy, you can make 24 favors for about $13.00, which comes out to about 54cents EACH. (And it took me an hour to make them!)

Crafty Night: September

This month for Crafty Night we concocted a fine fall weather potion. Fireside mocha! I've shown it on my blog before, HERE.
It was the first month back at our original location. And I think it might have been my most favorite set up. The room is semi-large & I hung felt leaf garlands from the ceiling, just around the perimeter of the crafty table. It made things feel more intimate & closed in as we all sat at the table eating, crafting & playing games. I was amazed that tiny little strands could do that. I might have to do something like this every month.

For supper, I served corn chowder. I have never ever made chowder in my life. I got the recipe via pinterest, HERE. The recipe turned out great. I think it would have been even better if it had more time to sit out & get all thick & tasty. But it was delicious nonetheless. I'm excited to experiment with more soups & chowders this fall!
I've decided this would be the last month we have dinner together before Crafty Night. My friend in charge of the meals for Crafty Night recently moved away & it's a big job doing both the craft AND dinner. So, it'll be a "bring your own snack to share" scenario from here on. If we have a potluck-style dinner before Crafty Night, or if plans change, I'll keep all my Crafty Night peeps posted.
A small table was set up with some craft necessities. I stitched bags from felt for everyone to put their ziplocked bag of mocha mix inside. I simply sewed on three sides, right on the outside of the bag. I got some really fabulous fall/harvest die cuts from Joanne's, too. Other available crafty supplies were: buttons (in browns & oranges), twine, ribbons, a hole punch, glue guns, glue sticks & regular ole Elmer's. I purchased manilla colored tags from an office store for attaching the directions & ingredients.
Another table was set up with all the ingredients for the mocha mix.
The craft was SOOOO quick. I couldn't believe it!! So, we filled time by playing the game Outburst. (My team won. Woot! Woot!)

Everyone took home a leaf garland for a favor.
It was a nice relaxing night with lots of new people!

Crafty Night: August

Last night's Crafty Night was all about relaxation. We made microwaveable heat pads.
Most crafters decided to make a long skinny one---perfect for around the neck. But I have one made in the shape of a square at home--I love heating it up & putting it on my lower back. One nifty crafter even made small ones---perfect for sticking in your pockets on cold days!
We simply sewed a rectangle of fabric & filled it with rice. Once you add the rice, you can add essential oils if you like. I also had a batch (pictured above) of a mixture of rice, flaxseed & lavender buds. (I heard that flaxseed retains the heat longer.) When you heat your pack in the microwave, the lavender, or other scents, really come alive.
When sewing your inside pouch that holds the rice, also sew sections into it. This helps the rice to stay evenly distributed, so it doesn't slide to one corner.

Last evening was Crafty Night's last night at ON3 Photography. It's really a beautiful space & I'm so grateful for Laura letting us get all crafty-like there. But, the set up has started to become overwhelming to me & I have decided to relocate back to our original spot: next door to my house in the Activity Room of New Life Assembly. It's been newly painted & I'm planning on making it a special place to hang out & craft, the 2nd Tuesday of every month.
(While we were crafting last night, there was even a photo shoot going on. Fun!)

After sewing our heat pack, we sewed an outside cover. Some crafters decided to make a sleeve, with an open top to slide their heat pack into. The cover is great because it protects the heat pack & you can wash it if it gets dirty!

Here are the pocket warmers:

The Crafty Night favors are one of my favorite details of the evening. I love making goodies for everyone to take home! Last night's favors were vintage fabric emellished notebooks.

July Crafty Night: Fabric Keychains

The July Crafty Night kinda snuck up on me. I've felt so swamped & busy & very unorganized in my thoughts & planning. We made THESE fabric keychains & they were a hit!
The set-up was a bit more involved than usual. Lotsa supplies! Fabrics, trims, twill tape, ribbon, embellishments, fusible web, buttons, key rings, scissors...the list goes on!

But before we get to the makin', here's some of the eatin':
At Crafty Night we enjoy a quick meal before crafting. Last night I fixed up a pasta salad, croissants, fresh veggies with dip & that amazing strawberry shortcake. (Not pictured: whipping cream piled high on top of each piece of shortcake. MMmmmm....)

It was so much fun to get the sewing machines out. Most of the crafters last night hadn't touched a sewing machine in a VERY long time.

These are photos of most of the keychains made last night...

I always like to make a favor for everyone to take home. Last night's treat were these felt pinwheels. The tutorial can be found HERE.
The last two Crafty Night's have been very low in attendance. I know this could be due to the fact that it's summer. But, I must admit, it's a wee bit discouraging. Setting up takes a LOT of work. Getting all the supplies ready takes a lot of time. Really, researching a craft to make every month is tedious work in itself.

Crafty Night is $5. And where can you go to have dinner, hang out with friends, learn a new craft, make something awesome, & take home a sweet 'lil favor---for $5?? This is not a money-making thing at all. I don't make a dime from this. All the money goes toward supplies. (The donations weren't helping to cover the cost of supplies, so I had to set a price.) I do this because I love making stuff & I thought it'd be fun to share that with people.

JUNE Crafty Night: FINDERS! KEEPERS!

It was a sparse crew for Crafty Night last night. I blame summer & all the busy schedules---& the fact that I was so busy myself that I didn't have time to send out postcard reminders. No biggie though! We had a small crew, yet the fun was GRAND!
We started out the night with a sidewalk weenie roast & hot dog bar. Chili, cheese, sauerkraut, onions...YUM!!
And then we all packaged up handmade items we had brought. We sealed them in ziploc baggies & included some information about Crafty Night. The basic concept for doing the handmade drop was inspired by The Toy Society. I specifically wanted Crafty Night to give a little bit of happy to the community. And in no way did I intend to take away anything that The Toy Society is doing.

We packaged up 36 bags & broke into two teams to deliver our goodies.
It was so special for me to have my 8 year old out there with us too!
She told me over & over how much fun she had.

One of my favorite drops was on a bench outside the library.
My other favorite was on top of this slide at the playground.

The teams joined up back at the Crafty Night base & ate ice cream bars.
Everyone left with homemade English Muffin Bread that the girls (sorta) helped me bake earlier in the afternoon.
I'm excited to hear about any possible stories of "strangers" that found the goodies. Just minutes after making our drop, we drove around to see if any had disappeared--& already one was missing. YAY! And after returning home from Crafty Night, I was facebooking with a friend & she shared how one of Zoey's classmates from school had found a few of our crafty treats around town---& it happened to be his birthday & he was so excited!!
You can view all the pics from June's Crafty Night by clicking HERE.

UPDATE:

I'll be posting any responses I get from the Crafty Night FINDERS! KEEPERS! drops here... (yay!)

Nikki-

My boys thought it was like manna from heaven last night. Joshua in particular thought the bags were placed out in celebration of his 9th birthday!
We were taking our walk and noticed a first bag containing a bug catcher necklace -- Joshua thought it was cool and grabbed it! Joshua proudly wore his new bug catcher necklace on the way home.
We walked by several bags on our now new quest to help Jonah find a bag for him. He eyed a rather large and bulky bag and called out that was his.... He grabbed it and ripped open the package much like Bam Bam and out popped a fuzzy pillow! Jonah had to sleep on his new pillow and even was on the look out for a blanket to go with it!
Both boys were so delighted and then got the giggles as to why someone would do this.
Thanks for making their night and thanks for letting me know about the Crafty Nights.
-Lisa Bryan

Lucky me, Lucky me. What a great mid-week surprise to come to work this morning and find a hondmade craft on the bench outside the library. Glad I was the first one in this morning. Love my owl, elf and cat. Thanks Crafty Night.

May 2011 Crafty Night

The girls & I learned to finger knit four months ago. When I recently found THIS tutorial about using jersey knit fabric to make finger-knit bracelets, I KNEW this HAD be the project for the May Crafty Night. The Crafty Night crew had a blast! What started out as simple bracelets turned into many projects! And I was inspired by their kooky creativeness.

We knit bracelets with one color of fabric.

We knit bracelets with two colors of fabric.

We made bracelets with pretty bow embellishments.

We knit rings for your fingers....& some for your toes (not pictured).

But what IS pictured is someone knitting WITH their toes. haha!!

We knit headbands.

And even a cat toy.

We knit anklets.

I even knit a bracelet for Zoey's American Girl doll.

And then I knit a necklace...

...or two.

We had the most amazing Cool Veggie Pizza, Chinese Ramen Noodle Salad, & frozen fruit slush dessert for dinner! (Thank you Sarah, Sadie & Laura for the food! I love you for feeding us every month!)

Guests left with Jones soda--in Berry Lemonade, Green Apple or Cream Soda flavors. Each bottle was tied off with a whimsical paper sphere. (These paper globes were leftover from Pazely's Ice Cream Summer birthday last year. I made garlands of these & they got SOOO tangled after her party. They've been sitting in a heap in my studio ever since. I snipped several off & tied one to each bottle.)

I just love hanging with my creative friends! (Thanks for showing up & crafting with me every month!)

Click HERE to view the entire set of pics from May's Crafty Night.

More deets:
• The blue fabric was purchased at JoAnne's, but I had the best luck finding the rest of the fabric on amazon.com.
• Though the tutorial for the jersey knit bracelets shows a different technique for finger knitting, my girls & I learned how to finger knit HERE. Not much different, but it's how I taught the Crafty Night crew. This link also shows a different way of ending. I liked it better for some reason & always use this way.

And get ready for the June 14th Crafty Night! We're doing a "Handmade Drop-off". Bring a handmade item to give away. Or just come 'cause there will be lotsa extras. We'll package up our goodies & scatter them about town for finders to keep!
